Somatic Experiencing® was developed by dr. Peter Levine and is backed by decades of research into how the body processes stress and trauma. The method integrates insights from the Polyvagal Theory by dr. Stephen Porges, which explains how our nervous system automatically shifts between safety, activation, and freezing.

Frequently asked questions

  • Somatic experiencing helps your body release stuck stress and tension. When we experience something stressful or shocking, energy can get "trapped" in our nervous system. This can manifest as chronic tension, anxiety, or physical complaints.

    How does it work? We focus our attention on what your body feels - warmth, tingling, tension or relaxation. By consciously connecting with these sensations, your nervous system can rebalance itself. Your body often knows exactly what it needs: shaking, deep breathing, or making a certain movement.

    For example: Tension in your shoulders receives gentle attention, causing the body to naturally begin relaxing. These are signs that your nervous system is healing itself.

    It's a gentle, natural way to help your body heal without having to retell the whole story.

  • Yes - somatic guidance is about awareness, not physical manipulation. Your own safe space actually helps. So both in person (in the region of Leuven) or online are possible.

  • It varies per person. Some notice change after 2-3 sessions, for deeper seated patterns I recommend the 6-session package.

  • Yes, somatic experiencing can be supportive for all these complaints because it helps regulate your nervous system and releases tension.

  • Yes, that's completely normal. You might feel trembling, warmth, tingling or relaxation. These are signs that your nervous system is regulating itself.

  • Perfect - we use small steps and go at your pace. Your sensitivity is a gift.
